BAFTA CYMRU NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

BAFTA Cymru Film, Television and Interactive Awards celebrate landmark 18th Birthday.

Doctor Who leads with nine nominations, closely followed by Martha, Jac a Sianco with eight nominations.

Russell T Davies is nominated for Best Screenwriter in both BAFTA Cymru and the British Academy Television Craft Awards 2009.

Welsh language programmes/films broadcast in 2008 make up 59% of all shortlisted nominations.

BAFTA Cymru has today announced the nominations for its 18th Annual BAFTA Cymru Film, Television and Interactive Media Awards Ceremony, which will honour the very best talent in over 30 film, programme, craft and performance categories at The Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay on Sunday 17 May 2009. The ceremony will be hosted by TV Presenter Gethin Jones.

This year’s Awards see 51 different productions compete for the coveted BAFTA Cymru mask. Skills are recognised across the industry and as a result, the Awards showcase a diverse range of films and programmes competing within each category.

Leading the pack with nine nominations is Doctor Who and closely following is Martha, Jac a Sianco with 8 nominations. In addition Amazon is nominated for a total of 6 awards.

Productions receiving 2 or more BAFTA Cymru nominations this year also include Y Pris, Abraham’s Point, Caerdydd, Con Passionate, Falstaff- Yr Opera, Gala Operatic Gwyl Y Faenol, Natur Cymru, Rygbi: Y Gem Agored, The Edge of Love and Torchwood.

Five individual nominees receive 2 or more nominations each and these are Ed Thomas, Gerald Conn, Gruffydd Davies, John Hardy, Rob Sullivan and Sion Thomas.

Russell T Davies receives recognition with a nomination in the Best Screenwriter category in the BAFTA Cymru Film, Television and Interactive Media Awards AND The British Academy Television Craft Awards for Best Writer. Russell receives his third nomination for Best Screenwriter at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his penning of the critically acclaimed revival of the Doctor Who series.

Best Film category, see’s Abraham’s Point, I Know You Know and Martha Jac a Sianco all nominated on the shortlist, highlighting the strength and variation of film production in Wales during 2008.

Lisa Nesbit, BAFTA Cymru Director says: “2009 is a landmark year for BAFTA Cymru as we prepare for our 18th Annual Awards ceremony and we have some exciting plans for this special event. Nominations across all categories have shown an 18% increase in 2009 from 2008 and it is demonstrative that Welsh talent and productions are flourishing now more than ever”

Welsh language programmes/films broadcast during 2008 represent 59% of all shortlisted nominations at this year’s BAFTA Cyrmu Awards Ceremony.

There will be three special awards announced on the evening of the ceremony which will be:

The Gwyn Alf Williams Award, for a programme or series of programmes which have contributed most to the understanding and appreciation of the history of Wales.
The Sian Phillips Award, which will be presented to a Welsh man or woman who has made a significant contribution in either a major feature film or network television programme.

The BAFTA Cymru Special Award, which is given for outstanding contribution in film, television or Interactive Media.

For the second year running, BAFTA Cymru will again be placing a limited number of public tickets on sale for the 2009 BAFTA Cymru Awards Ceremony. These tickets are on sale now from the Wales Millennium Centre box office and are being sold on a strictly first come, first served basis.

This year, both The British Academy Television Craft Awards and the BAFTA Cymru Film, Television and Interactive Awards are to take place on Sunday 17 May at the London Hilton and Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff respectively, in a joint celebration of excellence. With an abundance of talent nationwide the 17 May is a landmark date - being the 10th anniversary for the Television Craft Awards and the 18th anniversary for the BAFTA CYMRU Awards - a BAFTA night to reward the very best in craft and performance from 2008. Jointly, both Awards ceremonies will announce all their winners on the night.
